The system of government in the past


In the past, the country was ruled by a royal court.Its main ruler was the king.Here, after the king's term ended, the next king was his eldest son.If there was no eldest son, the position of king was given to his younger brother's eldest son.

The Old Parliament was opened on 29 January 1930 by the then Governor Sir Herbert Sweeney. The Old Parliament Building is located on President Mawatha, near Galle Face, Colombo. It was designed to face the river, the sea and the sea. Today it is used as the Presidential Secretariat. It operated until 1982. The building is built in a neo-classical style with large, pointed Roman columns. Today, the Old Parliament Building is still used as the headquarters of the government. It is considered a historical asset and a cultural symbol.

       




In the 1970s, it was decided to build a new parliament in Sri Lanka. According to this plan, the building was designed by a combination of high Sri Lankan tradition and modern architecture. The building was designed by the great Asian architect Geoffrey Bawa. Construction began in 1979. The building was completed in 1982. The new parliament building was opened on 29 February 1983. The new parliament building is located on an island in the middle of the Diawanna Oya, Kotte, Sri Jayewardenepura. This place is located about 10 kilometers from Colombo.
